If you are considering a trip to Shenandoah National Park, chances are you’ve heard of the hike to Old Rag Mountain. And if not, we are happy to be the ones to introduce this amazing hike to you! It’s closer to stay within the park and camp along Skyline Drive. Plus, this will give you more options for places to explore on the days before or after your Old Rag hike. Old Rag Mountain is a 3,284 feet (1,001m) mountain near Sperryville in Madison County, Virginia. A part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the peak is located within Shenandoah National Park and is the most popular hiking destination within the park. [3] In less than one mile, at the 5.4-mile mark, you’ll reach Old Rag Shelter. This is another day-use shelter with a picnic table. There is also a vault toilet.

When I first started doing it many years ago, there were 5-10 cars in the parking lot.
