About this deal

Prior to commencing their degree course, all students complete a ‘Fitness to Practise’ questionnaire which is designed so that the University can identify any reasonable adjustment requirements, and to ensure that all students entering onto one of our veterinary nursing degree courses will be able to meet the RCVS day one skills and competencies, required to qualify as a veterinary nurse. Successful students will need to have obtained at least 10 days of work experience in a UK small animal veterinary practice. Successfully complete our fitness to Practise Process. In the case of international applications, we will require a NARIC equivalency certificate. This module facilitates knowledge of anaesthesia and anaesthetic monitoring in clinical veterinary practice, in addition to facilitating theoretical and practical competence in the important field of diagnostic medicine. Underpinning knowledge regarding anaesthesia preparation, maintenance and monitoring of the patient and anaesthetic equipment will be developed, in addition to key drug groups, recognising specific risks, and anaesthetic emergencies, responding to emergencies appropriately. Diagnostic imaging will include radiography and emerging imaging modalities, underpinned by safe working practices in the veterinary environment. You’ll also be supported during your placement by a designated clinical coach within the veterinary practice and a Hartpury clinical tutor.

Within the university’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), student veterinary nurses have a dedicated clinical placement resource which contains anything and everything placement. This includes guidance and supporting presentations on: We do ask that students only attempt those tasks for which they have covered the underpinning knowledge for at university, as this underpinning knowledge will ultimately form part of their overall competency. I feel comfortable restraining any dog, of any temperament for any procedure, and my earlier experiences show this. I now need to build my confidence and focus on cats I put the wet floor sign out multiple times a day. I understand H+S regs and have no difficulties with this

We can be own worst enemy at times and sadly I have known some wonderful people with different strengths and such potential leave the profession because they lose sight of why they wanted a career within the veterinary profession in the first place. I have seen many colleagues suffer with mental health issues, burnout and sadly leave the profession because they did not have the support they needed, and whilst I know I am not superwoman (sadly) if I can help and empower just one person in the profession to keep pushing through the tough times and see how amazing they are then I have achieved so much already. History taking and appropriate examination; Identifying patients for referral to a veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse; Application of treatments; Programmes of preventative medicine.Fact: this is poor practice and may unnecessarily hold up progress. A number of activities may be given as guidance, but must not provide the basis for making a competence assessment. Judgements about competence should be based on performance rather than the amount of experience logged. The student’s subsequent experiences should include limbs / spines and any other gaps in anatomical positioning. The inclusion of different thorax / abdomen positions could also prove valuable. There is no requirement to repeat log lateral chest / abdomen x-rays. days (70 hours) current work experience in one or more non-clinical working environments with live animals.

Whilst I still enjoy veterinary nursing from a clinical point of view, my passion has steered for good and I am really excited for what’s to come.”If you complete 20 days (140 hours) of work experience in one or more UK-based small animal veterinary practice(s), then the non-clinical work experience evidence will not be required. Veterinary Nurses carry out nursing and technical work and perform a range of important diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures under veterinary surgeon direction. Beyond technical work, RVNs also educate owners on the welfare of their pets. In many practices they run their own nursing clinics. This was my 1 st jugular blood sample on a cat. I managed OK, but I need more practice in knowing where to clip, as I initially clipped in the wrong place Advancing your education has never been more attainable, especially with the rise of online learning.
